The clinical features and response to cortisone of menopausal muscular dystrophy.

چکیده
We describe here a form of myopathy which occurs predominantly in women during the climacteric period or after, and appears to have characteristic features. The condition has been largely overlooked in the past. Its recognition is of special importance since improvement may occur during treatment with wheat germ oil or cortisone. Our clinical experience is based upon a study of 12 patients, of whom 11 were women and one was a man. Six of the women were treated with wheat germ oil, and four showed notable improvement. The details are described in the preceding paper. Five patients, four women (two of them from the wheat germ oil series) and one man, have been tieated with cortisone, with dramatic improvement in all instances. Details of the trial of cortisone in various neuromuscular disorders have been described in a previous paper (Shy, Brendler, Rabinovitch, and McEachern, 1950). In this report we present the clinical features of this condition, together with pathological findings obtained by muscle biopsies. The use of maintenance doses of cortisone is also discussed. Little reference to this condition can be found in the literature. YNevin (1936) described two cases of late dystrophy which were undoubtedly of this type. He 'also reviewed the literature. Other probable cases are noted in the communication by Bramwell (1922). The cases of late myopathy described by Barnes (1932) may be different' 'They occurred in families in which other members showed myopathic disorders at an early age.

P164: Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an inherited X-link disease. The incidence of this muscle-wasting disease is 1:5000 male live births. Mutation in the gene coding for dystrophin is the main cause of BMD. Most cases of this disease succumb to respiratory and cardiac failure in 3rd to 4th decades. The slow progression of BMD and recent achievement of gene therapies make it as an appropriate c...

Background Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a deadly X-linked recessive disorder. This genetic disorder affects 1 among 3,500-5,000 males in the world. The majority of the patients are male, due to the type of inheritance. It affects most of the skeletal, the respiratory, and cardiac muscles, causing these vital organs to contract and eventually mortality.<br...

Background and Objective: Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) is a subtype of dystrophinopathies and designated as “mild form of dystrophinopathy”. The frequency rate of the disease is 1:18000 to 1:30000 in different populations and the symptoms are presented at about 8-9 years of age. The diagnostic panel composed of Serum Ceratin Kinase (SCK) measurement, Electromyography (EMG), and as a major...

Objectives: Myotonic Dystrophy type I (DM1) is a dominantly inherited disorder with a multisystemic pattern affecting skeletal muscle, heart, eye, endocrine and central nervous system. DM1 is associated with the expansion and instability of CTG repeat in the 3chr('39') untranslated region of the myotonic dystrophy protein kinase (DMPK) gene located on chromosome 19q13.3. The aim of this study w...
